Viewer Question: What cable to use to hook up HTPC to HDTV?
dltv asked:

Our Viewer Question is from Mark of City of Industry, CA:
I just built a HTPC with a core 2 duo 2.66 GHz, PQI 2 GB of RAM and a Nvidia EVGA 8800gts. I have a Sony Bravia KDL32M3000. Anyhow, I would love to hook up my HTPC to the T.V. What kinda cable would I need to do this? I am also getting a Blu-Ray dvd drive for my pc. Will my specs play high def dvds at full frame without any lag?
Mark, Jason Cross has got you covered. Your specs are good to handle Blu-Ray. As for the cable, get a DVI to HDMI cable or a DVI to HDMI adapter. However, you will need seperate cables for audio.

VGA would probably be decent for an SDTV, but not a HDTV. VGA is pretty weak when you’re looking to watch high definition content. DVI or HDMI is the best way to go, at least IMO. ;-)

can you hook up a dvd recorder to a computer
and my dvd recorder is hooked up to my tv.

Looks like I slipped. What I meant to say was that DVI doesn’t include audio. You are correct.

  7. ZeusChingon says:

that’s not true. The HDMI output from my laptop do output video and sound. I only use one HDMI cable to connect the laptop with the TV for video and audio output.

  8. jadetraveler says:

Both. HDMI doesn’t include audio, so if the video is coming from HDMI, then either way, you’ll need a separate cable for the audio.

If you use a DVI to HMDI adapter then no sound will be passed. There are some high end video cards that have HDMI and double as a sound card but we’re talking $450+. Most cards will offer DVI output but it’s video only. A Playstation with a HDMI output only needs the single cord to send video and audio. A computer that uses separate components will require separate wires because generally video cards don’t send sound.

dvi is just an older version of hdmi. Both pass a high definition signal. The hdmi on the other hand also passes sound where dvi is video only. if you must use a dvi to hdmi then the sound will have to be done separately.

wait when he says that the cable wont pass audio into the tv does he mean the dvi to hdmi adapter or the one with dvi in one end and hdmi in the oder?
