What cables do I need to hook up my new hd sound card into my hdtv or surround sound sytem?
Drake E asked:
I recently purcashe this sound card and it has the standard green blue black and pink ports on it. what do I need to plug this into my hdtv or surround sound system. Pretty new to sound cards.
Well, I’ll need some more information on what soundcard it is, what kind of DVD/Blu-Ray player you have etc. etc., but I’ll try to help anyway.
Depending on the soundcard you have, it might have a SPDIF (or optical, or toslink) input. If it does, you could run a cable from your DVD/Blu-Ray player to your soundcard (you might need some adapters that are available on amazon.com or other websites/stores - see sources). You can also run an HDMI cable from your DVD/Blu-ray player to your HDTV and then run the SPDIF cable to your soundcard. In either case, you’ll have to configure your soundcard to accept/decode the incoming signal of the optical cable. Keep in mind that SPDIF cables only allow Dolby Digital and DTS or lower to pass through, but not any High Def Audio tracks (such as Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, or Linear PCM)
Now, if you want High Def sound (seeing that you have an HDTV and you may have a Blu-ray Player) you will have to buy a receiver that supports pre-amp outputs. You would have to run an HDMI cable from your Blu-ray player to your receiver, and an HDMI cable from your receiver to your HDTV as well (if you want high def video that is). Then you’d have to run several cables Y-cables (cables that split a regular 3.5mm audio jack into 2 separate RCA jacks, also found under my sources) from the pre-amp outputs to the subwoofer from your computer surround sound system (once again, I don’t know if this is the case, but that’s what I’m guessing :D).

I hope this has helped you. Good luck!
