What is the best way around the sound limitations of connecting a DVI to an HDMI input of an HDTV?
Mike K asked:
I’m new to the land of the HDTV, and was wondering if it is typical for the HDMI Input of an HDTV to have a corresponding audio input. Say “Video 1″ is HDMI, and you have your tv on “Video 1″ is there usually a space to plug in the Red/White RCA cables to add a seperate sound signal to the TV as “Video 1″ is selected?

If this isn’t the case, does anyone have an answer to the lack of sound dilema that DVI to HDMI conversion presents?

sometimes they do and sometimes they dont.
in my TV, they have HDMI 1 and 2 which have no red/white plugs, but HDMI/DVI 3 which does.
honestly, its never even crossed my mind…i havent used TV speakers for sound in ages. like 10-11 years.
the problem is that HDMI’s audio signal is electric and digital, while red and white is also electic but analog and optical cables are optical and digital. you need conversion to happen, and that isnt cheap.
It’s pretty common to see the red and white audio jacks with at least one of the HDMI connections.
You either need to go to 5 point component cables, red and white RCA or see if you have an optical output/input which would be the best sound quality. There should be corresponding red/white for the video channel the HDMI is connected to.
Good luck and welcome to the club.
